The Bracelet of Attart
Katina's "Bracelet of the Crosses"
Smyrna, in 1878 - the Legend
All of the Attartines wore a bracelet bearing crosses and symbols. By this they were recognizable. In those times, during the sacred wars between the benevolent followers of the Goddess (the Attartines), and the sorceresses of the evil Vaalinde, every victorious Attartine used to rip the defeated sorceress' symbol off her neck and hang it from her bracelet by a red string. Thus, every bracelet was unique. In 1878, when Katina lived, the Witches strongly believed in the powers of these bracelets over love, life and luck. Katina Serbetoglou-Karaman-Alia Sambantzibey was always wearing hers. She wore it on her wrist or hung it around her neck with a red string, symbol of the Ttzans. "With the power of this bracelet, as I wish, so shall it be" she used to say. "Mada Attart advised me to ask of it only what's good, and so it shall be."
When Christos, a renown jeweler originating from Smyrna, asked my permission to copy her Bracelet of the Crosses, my first reaction was absolute denial. "No!". I was thinking that this bracelet belonged to her and her alone, and I wished to preserve her secret. But as I kept thinking it over and over, I realized that if this proposal had been made directly to her, she wouldn't have denied. And why shouldn't the women have a taste of her aura? Why shouldn't they take power from her power? Belief from her beliefs?...My answer changed to "Yes!" and Christos started working - for I am certain that a person coming from Smyrna will first of all respect his heritage. The bracelet you see is an exact copy of Katina's Bracelet of the Crosses. The crosses are old, and their designs go back at least 100 years. And according to the legend, in the Old Days, there was a full moon ritual before the bracelets changed hands. A ritual which, under the moonlight, made the bracelet come to life and give its power to the new bearer. They baptized them in the waters of the sea and the lakes, they scented them and made them reflect the fires they lit in the woods.
Every new Witch would receive form the hands of the Mada (the Elder) the Bracelet, and at the first full moon she would go out in the open for the moonlight to fall on the bracelet on her hand. She asked of the bracelet to obey to her and her alone, to give her faith and potency in love, luck, happiness, wealth, the fulfillment of her wishes and victory over evil. The bracelets shall be few - exact copies of Katina's Bracelet of the Crosses. The ritual of the Tzans shall be followed in detail and they will be given to the women, a gift from Katina, symbols of power, femininity, charm and most of all love, from one woman to another.
