The Powder of the Goddess
Ruh-Oyouz

Ruh Oyuz, the Powder of the green-eyed Goddess, was believed to be a strong protection against malevolent witchcraft and sorcery. It is made of Wheat, Barley and Rye, the three sacred crops, symbol of the Goddess Istar (Astarte or Attart, later on), Mother of the Earth.
Actually, it is this primal Goddess of the Earth and, consequently, of agriculture and fertility, that all the goddesses of the ancient world sprung from: Demeter, goddess of agriculture, Artemis, goddess of the forests and hunting, Hera and Aphrodite, goddess of love. It is indeed because of Aphrodite that the women believed that the powder of the green-eyed goddess also works in love magic: any girl who possessed it could easily catch her beloved's eye and find her way to his heart. This powder was of green colour and it was kept in a small tapped vase made of iron, which they would hang behind their doorways. "To guard my house against bad luck, and myself against the evil eye" they said as they hang it.
Quite often they carried the "Ruh Oyuz", the powder of the Goddess, on them when they went out. They kept it near their busom in a special tiny iron case, chanted and charged. When they felt the evil powers surrounding them, they poured a pinch of the powder on their breasts, mixed it with their saliva and spread it over them, so that the powder would stick on their skin - according to their words, nothing had the power to harm them after that.
This ritual had deep roots inside their souls since the ancient days. This is proved by the words of Mehmetta, a conjurer who lived at Katina's time: "When bad luck goes away, one breaths fresh air, the good forces of nature are free to rejoice and only good things flow into our lives".
