The lucky little bat
that fills your life with wealth
Veikky Notola
This tiny piece of jewellery is an exact copy of the Witches' bat, for which they used to say: "If you wish your purse to be loaded with money, all you have to do is tie the Veikky in it, so it cannot fly away. Fortune will come along and nest therein."
People are appalled by bats. They hunt them down and chase them away. The bat is a flying rodent that, due to its frightening appearance, is connected to dark myths, and strange beliefs and legends.
For the Witches, the bat was a symbol of immense magical power and good fortune, and was therefore considered to be a priceless component in spells, bindings and healing treatments. In the year 1670, a Witch was said to have healed a young man whose left side of the body was paralyzed because of a stroke. The medicine she used was nothing but the saliva of bats, as was found later in her writings. The Witches of old had given the name "Veikky Notola" to a large bat species which, according to their beliefs, had tremendous magical powers. Even a picture of it had the power to attract money and good fortune. An old spell stated that the copy of a red bat inside a purse would attract money and wealth to nestle inside it.
For this purpose, they would make the "platinum of the Notola". This was a platinum amulet. The Witch melted the costly metal and form it after the shape of the Notola, to shield within it its magical powers over good fortune. Then she enameled it in scarlet red enamel - the color of blood, so that the Notola would "feed" and awake. We often say that luck is blind - the bat, though, can find its way even in the utmost darkness.
To keep the Notola satiated and therefore happy, the Witches enameled her in red. They believed that the color of blood kept the Notola pleased, and consequently close to them, and that, in return, the bat would bring them wealth, riches and good fortune.
As soon as the amulet was ready, the Witch would go out at night and evoke her bat, by repeating the following spell three times:
"Oh creature of the darkest night and of the brightest moon, I summon and I stir you! I evoke you! Awake! You, whose sight is dark, brighten my fortune! Brighten my harvests and pave my path with gold! Wrap me up in platinum and silver, for I have done the same for you, and may I hence count my weight in sovereigns of gold! May wealth find its way to me the same way you find your way into the darkest night. May fortune, gold and wealth find me even if I hide in the darkest forest - just like no pray has ever been able to escape your chase. Veikky Notola, scarlet red, bring wealth to me ……, daughter of ……"
From that night on, the Witch would carry the platinum bat in her purse or on her skin, to bring her wealth and good fortune.
