The White Powder
In the Old Days the women believed that the White Powder was a very strong tool of protection and purification, able to guard themselves and their homes against bad luck and the evil eye. They used it in order to cast the White Circle, a magical circle to capture the evil spirits, along with all bad influences.
The White Circle was a very common purification practice among the women of the Craft in Smyrna of yesterday. It is made of the three sacred crops of the Goddess (Wheat, Barley and Rye) and it is enchanted and charged for three lunar circles. In Katina's times, they used to cast the White Circle around their house at sunrise and when the Moon was Waxing, dropping a pinch of White Powder everywhere there was an opening, windows and doors, and speaking out the following wish: "Ghana per, o iste per, trasvine. Afendm Ra, Ttzer takim. Coulise svem apri Ra."
Then, lighting up a candle, they would form two Xs of smoke either on the entrance door or on their bedroom door, speaking out the following: "May the banshee be banished, darkened in the smoke and gone".
